| Proving that nothing remains exclusive in our globalized world, Hong Kong’s one and only Black Metal solo-project, Saedus Darknight, releases a first album steeped in his Norwegian influences titled ‘Empty.’ As such endeavors go, the drums are repetitively programmed and production is weak. The guitars, however, grate clearly (it isn’t as if TV static were playing), while the bass throbs and reverberates on occasion, both keeping true to the music’s intended rawness. It’s obvious the guy’s got talent, so he’s due some well-deserved props for his multi-instrumental abilities. Starting with ‘They Live,’ an icy soundtrack no doubt inspired by a horror movie whose chilling musical texture features these obnoxious electronic fart noises (no kidding). ‘Blackened Pits of Darkness’ carries an atmosphere as foreboding as a gathering storm and introduces the listener to Saedus’ putrid croak. ‘Epicrise’ marks the thrashier persona of its creator while ‘Limbs of Trees’ is an ode to a haunted forest. When ‘Obey’ hints at a lousy ending to a first album, the exciting romp that’s ‘Sin’ finishes the ride and saves the day. Throughout, the muddy production runs unevenly, one song either sounding better or worse than its predecessor. At times reminiscent of early Emperor (without the keyboards), ‘Empty’ is at best exceptional here and there. And that’s pretty much it.
