If you asked HailndKill whether he liked Disturbed five years ago, he’d answer ‘No.’
If you asked him again following their Dimebag Darrell tribute ‘Ten Thousand Fists,’ he’d answer ‘They seem to have released a solid album.’
With this year’s ‘Indestructible,’ HailndKill’s opinion of the band has finally been redeemed.
It first caught his attention when he watched the video for its title track and marveled at how un-Nu it was. Shifting between footage of the band rocking out and these warriors down the ages (caveman, bushman, knight, samurai, doughboy, US Army chick), the song ‘Indestructible’ audibly proved Disturbed could play real, balls-to-the-wall Heavy Metal.
With the whole album finally in his possession (guess where he bought it?) HailndKill is glad to report that Disturbed have indeed kicked his ass. If you’re into Pantera, Megadeth, Avenged Sevenfold, Primal Fear, Dream Evil, and basically metal without the kvltness, Disturbed’s ‘Indestructible’ is as no-frills as it can get. The opening title track is already a knockout, but overlooking the simplistic and sometimes stupid song titles (Perfect Insanity?) will help you appreciate what else the band has to offer: serious guitar solos from Dan Donegan, rumbling (if rather unimaginative) percussion, and a solid melodic back bone running through each song. Though Dave Draiman robotically delivers the lyrics (what was Vinnie Paul thinking when he compared him to Rob Halford?) and still does those trademark barks and snarls of his, he’s really the best person for the job. You see, Disturbed are a median metal band, their music sitting in the middle of the soundscape we inhabit, never leaning toward either grandiose or overly dark extremes.
Having the album’s musical content crammed inside four minutes or less—as if every one of them were a potential single—Disturbed move comfortably within the verse-chorus-verse-chorus-solo-chorus structure like true professionals, and it makes for a rewarding listen. The album’s second single, ‘Inside the Fire,’ begins with electronic sound effects that makes you think it’s gonna be techno until the drums crash and the band gets into gear. Equally impressive is the mid tempo joyride that’s ‘Torn’ and the heart wrenching ‘Enough.’ Disturbed go for the throat once more on the energized ‘Perfect Insanity,’ which is a bit reminiscent of Megadeth’s more upbeat moments, then throw down their catchiest best for the rollicking ‘Divide.’ Cast from the same melodic mold are the bottom heavy trio that’s ‘Haunted,’ ‘Criminal,’ and ‘Façade.’
Wholly consistent though a tad repetitive, it’s no use hating on the band because they’ll be headlining shows ten years from now. Once ‘Indestrcutible’ ends with the standard-fare Disturbed metal on ‘Parasite’ the album offers a Faith No More cover you shouldn’t care about.
Now, if he were asked what he thinks about Disturbed’s ‘Indestructible,’ HailndKill would answer ‘it’s pretty good.’
