In this day and age where Slipknot has won over the hearts and minds of tr00 metalheads across the globe (‘knot haters be damned), it’s only fitting that HailndKill guide his faithful readership through their latest album, ‘All Hope Is Gone.’
Greeting the listener at track one is a useless intro titled ‘execute’ that doesn’t exactly inspire anticipation, but hey, it’s an intro. The ride begins on the odd notes at the start of ‘Gematria (The Killing Name),’ which morph into a total kick in the crotch with excellent Gothenburg melodic death metal guitars and an unrelenting pace. Once the ‘knot are done beating the living crap out of you they chill a bit for ‘Sulfur,’ a mainstream single that betrays their inclination toward more open-minded musical fare. They continue rocking out on the groovy ‘Psychosocial,’ a hammering song that possesses you to destroy furniture. Generic title perhaps, but it was its hard-hitting video that influenced the Nine’s introduction to Filipinometal. You’ll also dig the newfangled guitar solos and how the singer dude (what’s his name again?) croons a chorus you can’t help falling in love with.
‘Dead Memories’ is a shameless venture into alternative rock and from here the band lazily putters around substandard music on ‘Vendetta’ and ‘Butchers Hook.’ ‘This Cold Back’ marks the return of the brutal shit and the unrelenting pitch continues on its mid tempo counterpart ‘Wherein Lies Continue.’ As if severely taxed by these heavier exertions, all nine members loosen their jumpsuits and exhale for the vibrant power ballad ‘Snuff.’ The title track has them going ape shit once more and turning your brain to soup. The song ‘All Hope Is Gone’ is what pimpled teenagers turn to in their search for an epic Metal anthem that breathes damnation and pain.
Iced Earth seem to have leant Slipknot a title with ‘Child of Burning Time,’ though Iced Earth is the last band that comes to mind once its radio friendly catchiness drips from your speakers. On the album’s last leg, Slipknot go down the ballad route for the millionth time. This album’s sequel to ‘Vermillion’ is cool and ambient, specially crafted for the casual listener. The carousel themed ode ‘Til We Die’ closes ‘All Hope Is Gone,’ it’s the band’s bromantic (brother + romance = bromance, viz., heterosexual relationship) declaration of faith done in a fashion that would just as easily apply to Manowar.
Slipknot have now cemented their credibility with ‘All Hope Is Gone’ and if you still get bored on some songs, just try naming each masked member in a single breath. Let HailndKill give it a shot: there’s Corey, Joey Jordison, Shawn of the beer kegs, DJ Lethal . . . Oh wait, that’s the guy from Limb Bizkit . . . Argh!
Keep it true yo.
